A pet is an animal kept for companionship and enjoyment or a household animal, as opposed to wild animals or to livestock, laboratory animals, working animals or sport animals, which are kept for economic or productive reasons. The most popular pets are noted for their loyal or playful characteristics, for their attractive appearance, or for their song. Pets also generally seem to provide their owners with non-trivial health benefits; keeping pets has been shown to help relieve stress to those who like having animals around. There is now a medically-approved class of "therapy animals," mostly dogs, that are brought to visit confined humans. Walking a dog can provide both the owner and the dog with exercise, fresh air, and social interaction.

What type of pet would you recommend for my circumstances?
Q. I live in an apartment in a college town where most pets that can't be kept in a terrarium, aquarium or cage are not allowed. With these restrictions in mind what good pets would you recommend? (If the pet doesn't make a lot of mess and doesn't smell I might consider keeping it even if it breaks the lease agreement.)

A. There are lots of great pets that can be kept in a terrarium or a small cage. If you want something unique and easy to care for, try a hermit crab. They are fairly entertaining, can't bite, don't get sick or get infested with fleas, and they don't stink at all. If interested, I have included a weblink about caring for hermit crabs.

What is the best pet to bring to college?
Q. I am a college student, and I was wondering which pet is the best to bring. The reason I want to bring one is because I have an anxiety problem, and I would like company in my single room (so preferably something nice and friendly). I have ample time to take care of a pet and let it run around for a few hours, as I am usually in the room working. Any suggestions?

What is your experiances with pet insurance for rabbits?
Q. We have 2 young rabbits and were wondering how VPI pet insurance is, co-pay, customer service, total payout, excetera. Anything you can tell us will be appreciated. Also, do you know of any other pet insurance that insures rabbits? Have any comments on them? Thanks! I can't belive the stupid answers I am getting, rabbits are wild animals, pet insurance is stupid? This question is for real people that have real pets, that use real pet insurance.

A. I have had it on my ferret it basically just covers emergenicies no routine checkups or vaccinations, spay nuetur etc. and there are certin things it dosent cover but it is good to have just in case you would have to call them to find out exactly whats covered on rabbits. Although with this insurance you pay the vet up front then get reimbursed by the insurance company. The best thing to do is get a list of what is covered and what isnt and talk with your vet about it.
