What filmmaking books do you recommend for one who wants to become a film director?
Q. I currently have the book "Filmmaking for Dummies" written by Bryan Michael Stoller. I'm also an incoming junior in highschool and haven't taken any film classes nor made a movie.

A. Eric, I would go to www.amazon.com and search for Filmmaking Books. Check and see how many stars (or reviews) people give books. Good luck.

Q. I'm an amateur filmmaker who is interested in the new canon EOS 7D camera for digital filmmaking, and I know nothing about recording sound for films. What are the requirements when applying to college to Major in Filmmaking?
Q. Are there any websites or books that could help me out with that? Besides the usual (essay, etc.), do I have to make a short film or write a screenplay in order to apply? What do I have to do?
Asked by Fearless in the Rain - Wed Jul 9 13:42:57 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. depends on the school. some schools require clips of short films/a portfolio. So go on the school's website and look at the prospective students section. Its usually under the majors section. maybe collegeboard.com can help, but they just outline general information. pick up a catalog of the school you're interested in. They'll have the requirements in there. if not, email the schools. I've done that before, and they didn't seem to mind.

Where are some places in cleveland to get filmmaking experience?
Q. I was wondering where in Cleveland Ohio, is a good place to get film making experience. Through work, volunteer, internships, or helping out on a project. Any ideas any other ideas, that would work anywhere? Should I join a theatre group of some sort??

A. Specifically, what kind of experience are you looking for? Are you hoping to shadow a specific Department Key or would working as a Production Assistant be good enough for now? I've listed some links and contact information below to help get you started, but you should start by contacting the Cleveland Film Commission to find out if any projects are being shot in or around the area. If yes, then you'll want to get in touch with the Production Coordinator for the project and let that person know what you are interested in. Try to be as specific as possible. If you are unsure of what all the positions are on a professional movie set, I urge you to read the book, "What I Really Want to Do: On Set in Hollywood" which describes in exactly… [cont.]

A. A "dolly grip" holds the cables for the camera as it's moving back and forth to keep them from getting in the way so the cameraman doesn't trip on them. "Best boys" are responsible for the daily running of the lighting or grip department. This encompasses many responsibilities including hiring and scheduling of crew, the ordering and returning of lighting or grip equipment, workplace safety, timecards, expendables, loading production trucks, planning and implementing the lighting or rigging of locations and/or sound stages, coordinating rigging crews and additional photography units (if applicable), handling relations with the other production departments, overseeing the application of union rules (if applicable), and serving as the main… [cont.]
