Animal testing, also known as animal experimentation, animal research, and in vivo testing, is the use of non-human animals in experiments. Worldwide it is estimated that 50 to 100 million vertebrate animals are used annually—from zebrafish to non-human primates. Invertebrates, mice, rats, birds, fish, frogs, and animals not yet weaned are not included in the figures; one estimate of mice and rats used in the United States alone in 2001 was 80 million. Most animals are euthanized after being used in an experiment. Sources of laboratory animals vary between countries and species; most animals are purpose-bred, while others are caught in the wild or supplied by dealers who obtain them from auctions and pounds.

The research is conducted inside universities, medical schools, pharmaceutical companies, farms, defense establishments, and commercial facilities that provide animal-testing services to industry. It includes pure research such as genetics, developmental biology, behavioural studies, as well as applied research such as biomedical research, xenotransplantation, drug testing and toxicology tests, including cosmetics testing. Animals are also used for education, breeding, and defense research. The practice is regulated to various degrees in different countries.

Supporters of the use of animals in experiments, such as the British Royal Society, argue that virtually every medical achievement in the 20th century relied on the use of animals in some way, with the Institute for Laboratory Animal Research of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences arguing that even sophisticated computers are unable to model interactions between molecules, cells, tissues, organs, organisms, and the environment, making animal research necessary in many areas. A number of scientists, animal welfare, and animal rights organizations—such as PETA and BUAV—question the legitimacy of it, arguing that it is cruel, poor scientific practice, poorly regulated, that medical progress is being held back by misleading animal models, that some of the tests are outdated, that it cannot reliably predict effects in humans, that the costs outweigh the benefits, or that animals have an intrinsic right not to be used for experimentation.

A. Why would they sew a monkey's eyes shut to study the effects of blindness?Isn't it obvious what effects blindness would have on people. I know some testing has to be done on animals, but what are some of the alternative methods? Did Iams really treat the dog food taste testers badly? What kind of foods do dogs like,gm or non-gm? Are there any laws regarding the welfare of animals in testing,if yes are they well regulated? Why is the FDA pushing animal cloning(for food) so much? Why would scientists want to make a glow in the dark pig(seriously, look it up? Why would scientists make a cow who can't contract mad-cow disease, why not stop mad cow at the source and stop feeding animals to other animals? How many animals does the USDA even… [cont.]

what exactly do they do to the animals during animal testing?
Q. i am against animal testing. I know they test the products on animals. But i've seen pictures of cut open animals. What exactly do they do to them? What is the need to cut them open? Please let me know! I forgot to add. this is the biggest reason. Sorry for this. But I was wondering about cosmetic purposes. Based on medical treatments, I think it's okay to find cures for certain diseases.

A. I'm not really going to argue with you and say that animal testing is morally right or anything, but nearly every product that contains substances potentially harmful to humans is tested before reaching the market. Animals are sometimes used as "models" to predict the overall health risks that certain things will pose to humans. Without animal contributions, all the substances that cause cancer or neurological disorders or whatever would cause those things in human men, women, and children first. At that point, it may never be discovered as the offending agent. Testing on animals enables humans to identify specific chemical compounds that are most likely harmful. It also allows for general testing on drugs with known theapeutic value.… [cont.]

How can I find out who uses animal testing?
Q. I'd like to know who does animal testing, but I don't like having to find the information through PETA and other organizations. Is there a way to find the direct information about it, not through someone who already gathered it?

A. Try www.leapingbunny.org They aren't a fanatic organization like PETA, they just give you a list of companies registered with them who don't test on animals. If a product has their symbol, they don't test. And I'd also just stick to brands that say "not tested on animals" or something of the like. But I can help you out a bit, if you like!
