An animal shelter is a facility that houses homeless, lost or abandoned animals; primarily a large variety of dogs and cats. The animal is kept at the shelter until it is either reclaimed by an owner, adopted by a new owner, or placed with another organization. In the past, they were more commonly referred to as "dog pounds", a term which had its origins in the pounds of agricultural communities, where stray cattle would be penned up until claimed by their owners. Some animal shelters euthanize animals that are not adopted within a set period of time, others have a policy of only putting down animals that are in distress due to age or illness. Types of sheltersThere are several distinct types of animal shelters. The Glocester Town Pound, built in 1748 in Glocester, Rhode Island, is the oldest surviving town pound in AmericaAnimal control agencyAnimal control agencies, also known as municipal shelters (or "dog pounds"), are usually nonprofit organizations that are contracted by cities to enforce animal-related ordinances, and to provide animal-related services. In addition to housing animals, many animal shelters also provide education services for pet owners/adopters, low-cost spaying and neutering surgeries, vaccinations, veterinary care, and behavior training or resources. Open Door SheltersA shelter that accepts all animals that come to their door without a waiting list and without a fee. A true "Open Door" shelter does not require a fee at surrender (although they will ask for a donation.) An "Open Door Shelter" does not discriminate. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Is it safe to volunteer at an animal shelter when you are pregnant? Q. My husband and I are trying to conceive. I have just started volunteering at the local animal shelter, which includes playing with dogs and cleaning their cages. I know that I shouldn't clean up cat feces when I'm pregnant, but is it safe for me to continue to work at the animal shelter with the dogs once I become pregnant? Asked by Kim - Mon Jun 30 22:17:49 2008 - - 29 Answers - 0 Comments A. Dogs are perfectly safe but if there is any chance you will be in contact with cats or their litter in any way then I would avoid it just to be on the safe side. When I was pg with my 2nd, I worked as a vet at a pet store. I told them I could not do the cats, period, and they didn't like it but there was really nothing they could do about it. I continued to care for the dogs, rodents, spiders and reptiles up until the day I gave birth. I made extra sure to steer clear of the cats and anything that was in their cages like toys, bowls, etc. My doctor OK'd this first of course. I washed my hands often and used hand sanitizer. I had no problem. If you can be reasonably separated from the cats and their feces you shouldn't have a… [cont.] Answered by Cathys29 - Mon Jun 30 22:27:44 2008 What's the best way to housebreak an adult dog adopted from an animal shelter? Q. Hi! I adopted a wonderful year and a half old boxer in January from our local animal shelter. She had been negllected and was underweight. She is doing great now, but I am having a hard time housebreaking her, even though at the shelter she was labeled as housebroken. Half the time she goes outside just fine, but the other half she has accidents in the house. Any tips would be appreciated. This is my first experience with the Boxer breed. The same idea works with your family pet. Your dog s crate is his home, his bedroom. It is likely that your dog will not like to soil his bed. Therefore, he will wait until he is let out to do his business. 100 per cent supervision supervision is the key to housetraining! While you are at home, your dog must be supervised. Whether you are watching television, making dinner, on the phone or on the computer, your dog must be watched. While it sounds like an impossible task, it isn t. Keeping the crate in a social part of the house makes it easier. Using a house lead a small, thin lead with a little clip on it also helps… [cont.] Answered by Shepherdgirl - Sat Apr 14 17:07:33 2007 Have you ever taken a pet to an animal shelter?
Q. I got a cat as a gift from my boyfriend. At first it was rather cute but then a couple of months ago it just started to become a real pain. Scratching the furniture and peeing all over the place. Yesterday, I watched it as it peed into my panty drawer and finally had it. Have you ever taken a pet to an animal shelter to get rid of it? Asked by Fast Kelly - Fri Jun 13 18:44:41 2008 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments A. No I haven't. I volunteer at an animal shelter and for me, it's heartbreaking when people do that. Quite a lot of people just come in and drop their pet off and say, "It's not the same as it was" "Don't have the time to take care of it anymore" "It's not what we expected". ...Heart breaking. I hate people who get pets without thinking about the consequences. When you get an animal, they become a part of your family. It's unfair to just disown them when there are problems... you've got to find a way around it! Most of the time it's not even the pets fault!! They are just acting naturally, it's not their fault if they haven't been taught what is wrong. It's yours. Honestly though, I'd rather the people who leave their pets at shelters for… [cont.] Answered by unknown - Sat Jun 14 02:12:21 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Animal shelter" Valley shelters overwhelmed with animals
