Cruelty to animals is the infliction of suffering or harm upon animals, other than humans, for purposes other than self-defense. More narrowly, it can be harm for specific gain, such as killing animals for food or fur use. Diverging viewpoints are held by jurisdictions throughout the world. Broadly speaking, there are two approaches to the issue. The animal welfare position holds that there is nothing inherently wrong with using animals for human purposes, such as food, clothing, entertainment, and research, but that it should be done in a humane way that minimizes unnecessary pain and suffering. Animal rights theorists criticize this position, arguing that the words "unnecessary" and "humane" are subject to widely differing interpretations, and that the only way to ensure protection for animals is to end their status as property, and to ensure that they are never used as commodities. Laws concerning animal cruelty are designed to prevent needless cruelty to animals, rather than killing for other aims such as food, or they concern species not eaten as food in the country involved, such as those regarded as pets. In lawMany jurisdictions around the world have enacted statutes which forbid cruelty to some animals but these vary by country and in some cases by the use or practice. From Wikipedia under the

Once they're dead it's not animal cruelty anymore. Answered by Elaine M - Sat Nov 14 19:41:16 2009 Can a vegetarian lifestyle be ethically justified solely on the basis of non cruelty to animals.? Q. Modern agricultural techniques and harvesting machines like combines kill millions of small animals each year such a field mice and other small rodents. Is a person who advocates a vegetarian lifestyle based on non-cruelty to animals merely choosing the lesser of two evils? Are certain animals more worthy than others? Or, should a person advocating vegetarianism based on non cruelty also pursue a lifestyle that turns its back on modern agricultural production methods? Asked by Paul J - Tue Dec 9 13:59:31 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. It is important to understand that there are people who live a vegetarian lifestyle for purely selfish reasons (myself included), and as such are less concerned with the death of other animals than they are with the health of themselves. With that being said; The questions you raise are purely argumentative and combative. These arguments could go on and on, to the point where you're arguing such things like; vegetarians should not eat bread for the death of yeast, or breathe air for the reason that we "kill" oxygen (for we must then argue that everything is inherently "alive") when we exhale and produce carbon dioxide. These are arguments for the sake of arguing. Q. If it is illegal for us to participate in dogfighting, cockfighting, or killing stray cats and dogs. Then why is it legal for us to use our rifle to kill deers and beers as a sport? deers and *bears Asked by Go For Broke - Tue Nov 27 01:39:29 2007 - - 26 Answers - 0 Comments A. I think the distinction between which animals can be killed, and which ones are prohibited from slaughter under animal cruelty laws, are based not on any empathy with the suffering of the animal, but is instead based on how useful the animal is. In other words if an animal can be domesticated to fit human needs, then needlessly killing them in dog fighting, cockfighting, or random acts of violence would be seen as cruel. In issues of whether to kill or not to kill, the utility of the animal is paramount. Dogs and cats have a variety of human uses such as being a companion, giving comfort to the sick, being used to assist the police in law enforcement activities, and assisting the handicapped (i.e. the blind and deaf).
